"The network is slow" is the most common complaint from staff, but it rarely points to what actually needs fixing. Here are 5 more specific signs that show your infrastructure has genuinely reached the point of needing a survey and an upgrade, instead of guessing and replacing equipment at random.
1. Clear slowdowns at peak hours, even though the number of users has not grown much
If speed drops only in certain fixed time windows (early morning, when everyone joins online meetings), the core switch or backbone link has likely hit its load limit at those moments, rather than the network being weak all day. Measure actual load by time of day before deciding which equipment to upgrade.
2. Wireless dead spots or dropped connections when moving around
This usually means coverage was not surveyed against actual device density, only room area. Adding access points at arbitrary spots without a wireless heatmap survey may not remove dead spots and can even cause interference between APs.
3. Repeated incidents at the same location or on the same device
Network equipment has a manufacturer-recommended lifespan. Repeated incidents in one place suggest the device has reached end of life, or that layer lacks needed redundancy (for example, a distribution switch with no backup when it fails).
4. No free switch ports when you need to add devices or new staff
This shows the infrastructure has reached the limit of its original design. Chaining small switches (daisy-chain) to gain ports is a stopgap that, if repeated, can hurt performance and redundancy.
5. Nobody knows the system is healthy until staff report a problem
If the only way to learn about an incident is to wait for users to complain, the infrastructure lacks proactive monitoring. Real-time central monitoring detects anomalies (high load, devices about to fail) before users are affected.
If your business sees 2 or more of these signs, the sensible step is a survey that assesses the current state against specific criteria, instead of replacing equipment by guesswork.
